Is fossil-fueled power generation being blown away be wind farms?

Is fossil-fueled power generation being blown away be wind farms? As the world’s population grows steadily, the demand for energy grows steadily too and relying solely on fossil-fueled power generation is just not viable over the long term. Fortunately, the general South African climate allows for the implementation of solar and wind farms to contribute to the grid. At present, South Africa has five fully operational wind farms, contributing 645.71 MW to the grid, with all South African renewable energy projects contributing 3,773 MW to the grid. See power generation capacity breakdown below:…

Light Speed Ahead with Li-Fi

Light Speed Ahead with Li-Fi Probably one of mankind’s most innovative inventions, the humble light bulb has truly revolutionised the way we view the world. The very first demonstration of incandescent lighting was in 1800, whereby, Italian inventor, Alessandro Volta, generated the first practical method of generating electricity - the voltaic pile. Made of alternating discs of zinc and copper, the pile conducted electricity when a copper wire was inserted at either end. The voltaic pile is actually a predecessor of the modern battery, however, as a result, Volta’s glowing copper wire is also…

Spray-on Thin Film Photovoltaics - Are we headed in the right direction?

Spray-on Thin Film Photovoltaics - Are we headed in the right direction? As we step into an age of increasing electricity costs and consumption, we have little option but to explore alternative energy options. Only through curiousity, engineering savvy and an unwaivering will to advance the technology around us, for a brighter future, have we been able to envision and produce several alternative energy options. We’ve come a long way in the last century, producing electricity in many forms. As we go along, we identify problems and then tackle them head on. One of the latest innovations in electricity…
